IS SURFACE FINISHING THE RIGHT SERVICE?

Choose surface finishing when the stone is sound and the required change is texture, sheen or surface protection.

Finishing changes the upper surface condition. It can reduce gloss, increase gloss, create a softer honed appearance, introduce texture or add compatible protection—but it cannot substitute for structural repair, failed fixing or deep substrate problems.

SURFACE FINISHING IS USUALLY THE RIGHT ROUTE WHEN

  • The stone is structurally sound but the existing sheen is wrong for the design or use of the space.
  • A polished surface needs to become honed or lower-sheen to reduce reflection and create a softer architectural appearance.
  • An exterior, entrance or wet-use area needs a more slip-conscious texture or specialist treatment after suitability review.
  • A newly fabricated or restored stone surface needs a defined final finish and compatible sealing strategy.

ANOTHER SERVICE SHOULD BE ASSESSED FIRST WHEN

  • The main problem is dirt, grease or residue sitting on top of an otherwise acceptable finish — cleaning should be assessed first.
  • The marble has deep scratches, cracks, chips, lippage or failed repairs — restoration may be required before final finishing.
  • A large wall or floor still needs to be physically installed — flooring, cladding or mechanical fixing is the correct first route.
  • The surface has an unknown coating or chemical treatment that may react with abrasives or sealers; a test area is needed before promising the final result.

The same stone can perform very differently when the finish is chosen only for appearance.

Gloss level, micro-texture and sealer choice influence reflections, cleaning, wet behaviour and how wear becomes visible. The right finish is the one that balances the design intent with the actual use area.

Highly polished marble can create strong glare under large windows or directional lighting, especially across open floors.

A finish chosen for a dry lobby may be inappropriate at an entrance, poolside transition or other area where water is regularly present.

HOW THE FINISH IS SELECTED

Start with the existing surface, then work toward the required sheen or texture.

Surface finishing is not a fixed five-pad recipe. The starting abrasive, chemical process and final treatment depend on the current condition, the stone and the requested result. We avoid cutting deeper than the finish change actually requires.

    We review the material, existing sheen or texture, previous sealers/coatings where known, traffic pattern and whether there are repairs that should be completed first.

    The target is agreed as polished, honed, brushed/textured, anti-slip treatment or sealed/protected—not simply “better”. Use area and maintenance expectations are considered at the same time.

    Prepare or refine the surface progressively

    The surface is cleaned and, where mechanical refinement is required, worked through an appropriate abrasive sequence starting no more aggressively than necessary for the requested change.

    Create the selected final texture or sheen

    The chosen process is completed to a controlled visual and tactile finish. Edge zones and hand-work areas are blended so the result does not change abruptly at machine boundaries.

    Protect where appropriate and inspect in real lighting

    A compatible sealer or specialist treatment is applied only where part of the agreed scope. The finished surface is then checked under the available site lighting and use conditions.

MATERIAL & FINISH COMPATIBILITY

Not every stone accepts every finish in the same way.

Mineral composition, hardness, pore structure and factory treatment all affect the achievable texture and sheen. We confirm the actual material before applying a finish route copied from another stone.

Natural MarbleCan be polished or honed depending on type and condition; etching sensitivity and traffic should be considered before choosing high gloss.

01How much does stone surface finishing cost in Dubai?

Our planning rates start from AED 15/m² for compatible seal-and-protect work, AED 18/m² for anti-slip treatment, AED 21/m² for polished finishing, AED 24/m² for honed finishing and AED 27/m² for brushed finishing. Final price depends on stone type, current condition, preparation, edge work, area, access and the selected treatment.

02What is the difference between polished and honed marble?

Polished marble has a higher sheen and stronger reflection. Honed marble is smoother and lower-sheen, so it reads more softly under architectural lighting. The choice affects appearance, maintenance and how wear or wet conditions are perceived; neither finish is universally better for every space.

03Can polished marble be changed to a honed finish?

Often yes, provided the marble and existing surface condition are suitable. The gloss is mechanically reduced through controlled abrasive refinement to create a more uniform low-sheen result. A test area is useful when previous coatings or treatments are uncertain.

04Can honed marble be polished again later?

In many cases, yes. The surface can be progressively refined toward a higher sheen if the stone is compatible and there is enough sound material to work with. Existing damage, fillers, previous treatments and adjacent finishes should be checked first.

05Does anti-slip treatment make marble completely non-slip?

No responsible finish should be described as universally slip-proof. Slip behaviour depends on stone, texture, water, contamination, footwear, slope and maintenance. A specialist treatment can increase surface texture or slip resistance for suitable applications, but the exact requirement should be assessed for the use area.

06Should marble always be sealed after finishing?

Not automatically. Sealing depends on the stone porosity, exposure and selected finish. A compatible penetrating sealer may help reduce absorption on suitable stone, but it does not make marble stain-proof, acid-proof or maintenance-free.

07Can you match the finish of a new replacement slab to existing marble?

We can often move the new piece closer to the surrounding finish, but exact matching depends on the stone, age, previous treatments and how the existing area has worn. The realistic target is visual compatibility across the finished area rather than promising an invisible difference under every lighting angle.
